(Nanaimo, British Columbia) – The Board of Directors of the Nanaimo Port Authority and the Council of the City of Nanaimo today announced the Nanaimo Port Authority’s support in the renaming of the New Nanaimo Centre as, “The PORT of NANAIMO CENTRE”.

The individual components of The PORT of NANAIMO CENTRE will retain their existing names – i.e. The Vancouver Island Conference Centre (VICC), the Nanaimo Museum and the Shaw Auditorium.

“Our participation in the naming of The PORT of NANAIMO CENTRE is in keeping with the Port Authority’s continued commitment to the growth and vibrancy of Nanaimo’s downtown core,” stated Ross Fraser, Chairman of the Board of the Nanaimo Port Authority. “The naming of the complex is our way of supporting the citizens and the taxpayers of Nanaimo. This support furthers our role as a contributing corporate citizen.”

Mayor Gary Korpan commented, “We are pleased that the Port Authority has taken on the naming of the complex and has once again demonstrated their support to the vitality of the city and the region. The role of ‘The PORT of NANAIMO CENTRE’ in the economic development of our City and the region will enhance the business activity in our city.”

Jeet Manhas, Chairman of the New Nanaimo Centre (NNC) Committee added, “On behalf of the NNC Committee, I wish to congratulate the Port Authority for their vision and support in the naming of the complex.”

Over the next ten years, the Nanaimo Port Authority’s contribution to the re-naming will total one million dollars. In the first year the City of Nanaimo will receive $280,000 - then $80,000 annually over the remaining nine years of the agreement.

Bill Mills, President and CEO of the Port Authority stated, “As a part of the Port Authority’s mandate and mission, we are proud to take part in local and regional projects in a financially responsible manner that contributes to the social and economic well being of the community.

As a community partner we have supported projects that have created pride in Nanaimo. We supported the construction of the Port Theatre; the development and construction of the Harbourside Walkway, Pioneer Waterfront Plaza and Swy-a-Lana Lagoon Park. These projects have created a beautiful waterfront for Nanaimo.”

Ross Fraser concluded, “The Port Directors see the naming the New Nanaimo Centre – ‘The PORT of NANAIMO CENTRE’ - as an enhancement of the Port Authority’s role in our city. We have taken the Port’s name from the waterfront and placed it into the heart of the new downtown.

We believe ‘The PORT of NANAIMO CENTRE’ will become another source of pride for the citizens of our wonderful, growing city.”
