B.C. Business Magazine profile – Vancouver Island Conference Centre

17 March 2008

When conference attendees step inside the new Vancouver Island Conference Centre for the first time this summer, they probably won’t notice that the service elevator can accommodate a full size SUV or golf course mower. They might not realize the power supply (up to 400 amps) is enough to run a small sawmill. They’ll likely even walk right across one of the 50+ floor ports that discretely hide all kinds of electrical, data and phone cords.

Instead, they’ll be distracted by the views right outside the centre’s floor-to-ceiling windows. Located in Nanaimo’s vibrant downtown area, the conference centre is steps away from the five km Harbourside Walkway with views of the ocean, distant snow-capped mountains, and fishermen selling their early morning catch. Hotels, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, boutique shopping, spas, and theatres also fill the easily walked downtown core.

Meeting planners are certainly inspired by Canada’s newest, most technologically advanced conference centre and its ideal location. According to Jim Owens, VICC director of sales and marketing, more than 80 events are already booked, some as far in advance as 2014.

The 38,000-square-foot centre, accommodating up to 1,300 delegates, opens this June in Nanaimo. The centre’s cutting-edge technology – with full wireless access, flexible meeting spaces, global broadcast capabilities, and green building standards – is also a big draw for conference organizers.

Several Air Canada flights, seaplanes and ferries access Nanaimo daily. And, says Owens, no matter which route you take, you can’t miss the spectacular natural beauty.
